In each variety both are extracted by steam distillation of the fresh plant. Citronella a grass that grows in Asian countries and Islands of Asia Pacific has a rich, crisp lemony aroma so the name Citronella. Citronella essential oil Ceylon and Citronellal are chemically dominant, they do not rule in terms of aroma. Instead it is a combination of Camphene, Borneol, and methylenugenol that characterize the scent. Action: Citronella is antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, and it is insecticidal, an insect repellent, and a deodorant. Traditional Uses: Various cultures have used this oil to treat intestinal parasites, digestive and menstrual problems, and also used it as a stimulant, help acne, bruises, colds, infections, insect bites, insect stings, flu, fever, oily skin, rheumatism, stomach spasms, exhaustion, excessive perspiration. Indications: Headache, respiratory infections, neuralgia, fatigue, and oily skin. Other Uses: This oil can be used as an antiseptic to sanitize and deodorize surfaces. Citronella makes an excellent insect repellent when combined with cedarwood. Application: Diffuse or apply topically on the bottom of the feet or on location diluted with massage oil.
