Calamus Essential Oil, India a perennial herb thar grows on the waters edge and in wetlands. It sends up leafy, grass like stems from its underground stalk. The stems may be up to 5 feet tall. Halfway up the stem, each leaf bears a 2 to 4 inch long fleshy cylindrical flower stalk, consisting of many tiny yellow brown flowers. This herbaceous, spicy, clove-like oil is great choice for our natural perfume artisans.
Dried calamus can be used for stomach cramps, gas, gastric ulcers, and lack of appetite.
The Indian rhizome is said to have a stronger and more agreeable flavour than that obtained in Europe or the United States. The properties of Calamus are almost entirely due to its volatile oil, obtained by steam distillation. The oil is contained in all parts of the plant, though in greatest quanity in the rhizome, the leaves yielding to distillation 0.2 per cent, the fresh root 1.5 to 3.5 per cent. Calamus Oil is used in perfumery.
